The Fifth Sign

The Fifth Seal

Mark 13:9-But take heed to yourselves: for they shall deliver you up to councils; and in the synagogues ye shall be beaten: and ye shall be brought before rulers and kings for My sake, for a testimony against them.

The Greek word for ‘testimony’ is marturion; the affinity of that word is martus, and means, "a witness judicially, by analogy a martyr."     (Strong’s #3142 & #3144)

The faithful martyrs are God’s Elect who will suffer persecution at the hands of ignorant men. Our purpose for being delivered up before the church rulers is to give God this second opportunity since Acts 2:1-11 to preach the true gospel to all the world.

Matthew 24:14-And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.

The word witness in Greek means, "something evidential, martyr" (Strong’s #3142 & #3144)

Mark 13:10-And the gospel must first be published among all nations.

Revelation 6:9-And when He had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held.

The Greek word for ‘testimony’ is marturia; the root word is martus, and it means, "a witness literal judicially, by analogy a martyr." (Strong’s #3141 & #3144)

Here, the fifth seal is opened and the apostle John looked and saw the faithful martyrs who were slain in the great tribulation for Christ’s name sake. These are the same faithful martyrs who were delivered up to the church rulers in Mark 13:9. The purpose of their martyrdom is given in the next verse.

Revelation 20:4-And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them; and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshiped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.
