Revelation 6:9-And when He had opened the fifth seal,
I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word
of God, and for the testimony which they held.
The Greek word for ‘testimony’ is marturia;
the root word is martus, and it means, "a witness
literal judicially, by analogy a martyr." (Strong’s #3141 & #3144)
Here, the fifth seal is opened and the apostle John
looked and saw the faithful martyrs who were slain in the great
tribulation for Christ’s name sake. These are the same faithful martyrs
who were delivered up to the church rulers in Mark 13:9. The
purpose of their martyrdom is given in the next verse.
Revelation 20:4-And I saw thrones, and they sat upon
them, and judgment was given unto them; and I saw the souls of them
that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God,
and which had not worshiped the beast, neither his image, neither had
received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and
they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.
